The consultation, launched by Fathers Direct, a national information centre on fatherhood, forms part of a wider initiative to disseminate national quality standards to organisations such as early years centres and childminders in a bid to stimulate higher standards in service provision.
The document, Fathers and Families: A public consultation concerning developing national standards for father-friendly services, was commissioned by the Family Policy Unit. It invites comments on ten draft principles which are aimed at fostering good practice among those working with fathers and their families.
The principles include encouraging staff to be positive and enabling towards the needs of fathers, urging organisations to develop an environment that shows fathers are welcomed and valued, and having at least some staff and/or regular service users a father can relate to.
