Share information, childcarers urged

Nursery teachers, childminders and other early years practitioners in the public, private and voluntary sectors are being urged by the Government to become involved in an initiative to share information about the children in their care. In guidance published last week, the cross-departmental Children and Young People's Unit says that local authorities should take a lead in ensuring information is shared across the statutory and voluntary sectors in childcare and social services, health and education.

In the introduction to the guidance, minister for children Margaret Hodge writes, 'Where practitioners pool their knowledge of a child's circumstances, that child is far more likely to receive the services they need, when they need them.' The guidance is available on www.cypu.gov.uk.

A spokesperson for the Children and Young People's Unit said childcarers should become involved in the new systems that are being developed to share information about young children. 'Take an interest and contact the person at your local authority that is developing and implementing the protocol,'
