Six more centres to win approval

* Six more early years settings - five of them in Leeds - were named children's centres by the Government last week. They are the Somerford children's centre in Dorset, and the Bramley, Chapeltown, Hawksworthwood, Beeston and Windmill children's centres in Leeds. There are now 67 children's centres in some of the most disadvantaged areas of England whose services include integrated early education, childcare, healthcare, family support and help into employment.

Margaret Hodge, minister for children, said, 'Our long-term vision is for a children's centre in every community. This will help all children get a sure start in life, help parents balance their work and family life, and support local communities.'

The Government's goal is to have 1,000 such centres by 2008.
