Exploring the possible connections from a topic on clothes led one setting in some surprising and rewarding directions. Pre-school teacher Nikki Edwards describes how a simple theme can take off across all areas of the curriculum From the comforting and familiar to the outrageous and fun, clothes contribute as much to our identities as they do to our daily lives - from keeping us safe to equipping us for a diverse range of activities and hobbies.

As part of our planning cycle, 'clothes' has always proved a popular topic at Sunflower Children's Centre in Sheffield. The non-threatening theme is easy to grasp and it stimulates the children's imaginations. It opens up a myriad of umbrella topics they get to decide upon, from which connected learning is possible.

We last visited 'clothes' two years ago and evaluations of the activities connected to the theme in the short and medium term were very positive from both the child and adult perspectives. As the topic was to run over a different season, we thought revisiting the subject would provide further learning opportunities. So throughout September and October, mothers and fathers visited the centre to 'model' what they wear to work.
