I agree that pay in the early years sector is low, but where is the money to come from to improve the situation? As a private day nursery our staff wages are paid for by fee-paying parents. If fees are increased to allow a decent wage, parents just won't be able to afford to send their children to nursery.

As a private day nursery our staff wages are paid for by fee-paying parents. If fees are increased to allow a decent wage, parents just won't be able to afford to send their children to nursery.

Seventy-five per cent of fees are already spent on paying our staff. The rest is used on resources to keep the nursery running, mains services, business tax, rent, rates and so on, and, of course, the taxman. So come on, the powers that be, invest some money and give nursery workers a fair deal.
