I have been in childcare for more than 20 years, the past five-and-a-half as a nursery owner and manager. When I first set up my nursery business, one of the issues the Government was looking into was low wages for nursery staff. Although wages have increased since then due to the minimum wage, nurseries and playgroups still need staff cover for holidays and sick leave, which means an extra person's wage. This has caused problems for some childcare providers and they have had to raise their fees to pay the extra costs this incurs. As a result, some have closed because parents do not want to pay more for childcare.
