Speaking up for a first birthday

An early years centre in the Highlands that helps local children to overcome their speech and language difficulties celebrated its first birthday last week. The I CAN centre at Obsdale Primary School in Alness is run in partnership with Highland Council and NHS Highland. I CAN, the charity for children with speech and language difficulties, has two early years centres in Scotland and 18 across the UK, running a programme of specialist therapy and education. Caroline Sutherland, whose four-year-old daughter Samantha started at the Alness centre eight months ago, said she was delighted by her progress.

Caroline Sutherland, whose four-year-old daughter Samantha started at the Alness centre eight months ago, said she was delighted by her progress.

'Samantha found it difficult to socialise and play with other children because they couldn't understand what she was saying. Now she never stops chatting and the new vocabulary she comes out with just amazes me.'

Representatives from Highlands education and health authorities joined in the birthday celebrations with parents and children. They are (from left) Andrew Anderson and Bruce Robertson (Highland Council), Clare Geldard (centre manager) and Heather Sheerin (non-executive director of NHS Highland).
