Staff requests

Nora Connolly is correct in identifying the troublesome issue of maternity leave for nursery staff (Letters, 2 February). It is difficult balancing act. The law states that staff have the right to request a reduction in hours, but managers are not bound to concede. You do have to look at their request seriously, but if you feel confident that agreeing would compromise your care, then you should turn down their request.

I currently have four staff sharing two full-time equivalent posts out of 15, which works well. I feel that to offer more jobshare posts would compromise the quality of my setting's care. All of our staff are aware of this. I will, of course, consider their request if one of our jobsharers moves on or is looking for an increase.
