Standards on induction 'too complex for all staff'

The National Day Nurseries Association has voiced concerns about the 'relevance' for nurseries of the common induction standards drawn up for the children's workforce. In its response to the official consultation, the NDNA said that while it supported the standards in principle, they were 'pitched too high'.

In its response to the official consultation, the NDNA said that while it supported the standards in principle, they were 'pitched too high'.

NDNAchief executive Purnima Tanuku said they were 'too complex for the significant proportion of the childcare workforce which has not yet achieved a level 3 qualification'.

She added, 'The time scale, resources and commitment to deliver them are not achievable for nurseries. We have advised a dual level approach, with a first tier induction for new entrants below level 3. We have also asked for support and guidance for managers and employers.'

The draft Common Induction Standards for Children's Services will be presented to the Children's Workforce Development Council for approval at the end of March. They are due to operate from September.
