Steps of confusion

Having read the transitions guide (Foundation Stage pull-out, 19 October), I want to work at Gallatown Nursery School in Kirkcaldy. It is great to see nursery staff doing their job and able to follow it through. They are lucky. I work in a day nursery. This summer we had 12 children leaving and going to 11 different schools. We filled out the stepping stones, took photographs and kept drawings. However, when one teacher visited she said the documentation was not wanted, but that parents might like it. Cheek! We work hard to assess children and staff often take records home to complete.

Another school has children for half-days to assess them. We have the children until the end of October, which confuses them. A third school has children for half-days on alternate days to make assessments.

They say it is so the child can adjust to the new setting, but I believe when a child spends nine hours in daycare and only 2.5 in school it's pointless. Our nursery settling-in sessions last three hours if the child is happy.
