Nursery World - Streets are 'no go' areas for children playing

Nearly half of young children today never play out on their street, according to a new report.

Living Streets, formerly the Pedestrians Association, is calling for a 20mph speed limit to be set in built-up areas to make it safer for children to play out.

Its report says the streets of Britain have become spaces that are considered no-go areas for children, with 11 per cent of parents with young children describing their streets as 'dangerous'.

A study of more than 1,000 people was commissioned to celebrate the charity's 80th anniversary and to build a picture of how the use of UK streets has changed.

Half of those surveyed were aged over 65 with grown-up children, and half were aged 30 to 40 with children from five to nine years old.
