Student is on to a winner

Congratulations to Carla Thomas, who has won the Academic and Vocational Achievement Award, part of the Edexcel Achievement in Education Awards 2002. The 18-year-old Swansea College student wins Pounds 1,000 to spend on an educational activity or item of her choice and the college also receives 1,000. Carla, from Portmead, Swansea, is studying for a BTec National Diploma in Early Years and an AS Level in psychology. The judges said they were impressed by her outstanding educational achievements and by her commitment to the local community.

She has been entered for the Outstanding Student of the Year Award presented in July.

, for as well as being the only student to gain distinctions in every module of her course so far, she is also a guide leader, a church group leader, an assistant at her local school, where she helped to set up a new library, and a fundraiser for Children in Need.
