Carmen Robinson reports on how she is refining her observation skills as part of her studies for an NVQ3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development For the month of May I have been continuing observations in my classroom at Folly's End School. There are many reasons for observing children, the main reason is having a good understanding of how they develop, learn and grow. With the information accurately recorded, this can be passed on to professionals, such as a speech therapist, who will assess how a child's language is developing and gauge whether this is impacting on behaviour and the ability to enjoy life in the nursery.

Liaising with parents is especially important if there are areas of difficulties and a practitioner must be able to work effectively in a teacher-and-parent partnership.
