Study days

After completing her first degree in psychology at the University of Reading last July, Laura Williams decided to study for an Early Years PGCE. She is currently in her second term of the course at Homerton College, Cambridge.

She is currently in her second term of the course at Homerton College, Cambridge.

'This term I am spending the majority of my time in Key Stage 1. I am really enjoying it, despite the increase in workload, responsibility and actual teaching time. I will be teaching two full weeks by the end of the placement.

'This course is highly structured and professional development is a dominant focus. Seminars encompass contemporary issues, as well as helping students to establish professional values,' says Ms Williams. 'We have even had workshops to help us deal with the stress of the job; the voice-training session was particularly valuable. We have also visited many different schools and establishments for a range of different purposes. In March we have an SEN day, followed by a visit to an emotional/behavioural difficulty unit and also a cultural diversity day in London.
