Subjective inspection regime is failing sector

Nursery World is a very useful source of information. It keeps me as a nursery owner up to date with ever-changing Government initiatives. It is also full of articles that illustrate good practice. I was particularly interested in the article about the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (Analysis, 22 March). However, it all makes me wonder if Ofsted inspectors are also kept up to date through training in what is universally considered to be good practice and where the emphasis should be in their inspections.

My nursery was inspected in February by an inspector who was more concerned about the accident book and our welcome brochure than our interaction with the children and their parents. In fact, she did not speak to the staff and children to any degree or the parents at all. We therefore received 'satisfactory' and 'good' from her when we have previously been found to have outstanding practice. As one member of staff said, we went from A* to
