I have been a nursery nurse for ten years and, in that time, the role of support staff in schools has changed considerably as we work in partnership with teachers, both in the mainstream classrooms and on a support basis. My colleagues and I believe the time has come for us to be recognised and rewarded properly for the job we do. We are a professional body of qualified and dedicated people who have put their commitment into the lives of the children we work with. But we support staff are constantly rewarded by seeing teachers receive pay rises and threshold payments, while being referred to as 'pig-ignorant peasants' or 'paint-pot washers'.
