The Government's Every Child a Reader scheme, an early literacy pilot for five-year-olds who are struggling to read, is to be rolled out to 30,000 children.

It follows an evaluation in May which found that children who receivedone-to-one support from specially trained teachers were around one yearahead of those in schools where the programme is not available (News, 15May).

Children's secretary Ed Balls unveiled two new schemes to boost literacyand numeracy skills in primary schools. Every Child a Writer, whichtargets seven- to eight-year-olds, will provide intensive support forchildren falling behind in writing and will be piloted in 135 schoolsfrom September.
