Support staff in primary schools in England and Wales feel undervalued in their job and most of them work up to ten hours a week of overtime without any extra pay, a survey by the Professional Association of Nursery Nurses (PANN) has found.

PANN conducted the survey last August among members working in schools in England and Wales. Its aim was to establish the roles, and variations in salaries and responsibilities of childcare professionals working in education. It follows a 50 per cent rise in the number of teaching assistants employed in classrooms over the past five years.

The survey found that 93 per cent of support staff worked between one and ten hours of unpaid overtime each week and their salaries ranged from slightly more than 9,500 to almost 12,500 for a 32.5-hour week.
