Support staff pay 'disgrace'

Classroom assistants in Scotland are earning as little as 6 an hour, according to a survey by the Equal Opportunities Commission, which branded their low pay 'a national disgrace'. An investigation into the role and status of Scotland's 15,000 classroom assistants by EOC Scotland reveals that classroom assistants are on the lowest local authority grades, earning annual salaries of 7,000 to 10,000, equivalent to 5.68 to 7.58 an hour.

An investigation into the role and status of Scotland's 15,000 classroom assistants by EOC Scotland reveals that classroom assistants are on the lowest local authority grades, earning annual salaries of 7,000 to Pounds 10,000, equivalent to 5.68 to 7.58 an hour.

Ninety-eight per cent of classroom assistants are women on term-time-only contracts.

EOC Scotland commissioner Rowena Arshad said, 'It's time to put right the scandalously low pay our classroom assistants receive for doing such a challenging and vital job.'

EOC Scotland is calling for a national action group led by local authorities in partnership with the Scottish Executive and trade unions and a national framework of job roles for classroom assistants.
