Sure footed

As an outreach worker for a Sure Start programme Julie Slingsby provides vital support for families with babies and toddlers. Here she describes a typical working week. Monday

Monday

My partner arrives home after his night shift at 6.30am. Oh, and there's my alarm clock going off to the tune of, 'Mummy!' After breakfast, drop little one off at his grandma's and get to the office for 9am.

I work as an outreach worker for Foxhill and Parsons Cross Sure Start, one of the Sure Start programmes in Sheffield. NCH is the main partner in the programme.

My first appointment is at 10am with a 12-week-old baby girl. Her mum is amazed at how much she notices and how she seems to react to different voices. The mother has been singing and trying to spend some time with the baby playing with rattles and other toys. We talk about the baby having the opportunity to lie on her tummy, on a mat or soft towel, to encourage her head control and the strengthening of her upper body.
