Two weeks after fire raged through the Clifton Sure Start Centre on Bowness Avenue, Mereside, the community is still waiting to find out if the damage to the building is permanent. Firefighters spent more than three hours on 2 May trying to control the blaze.

The following day, three boys aged 13, 14 and 15 were arrested in connection with the fire, and a 15-year-old girl was arrested last week.

The youths have been released on police bail pending further inquiries. A decision whether or not to prosecute will be reached by the Crown Prosecution Service on 10 June.

The roof of the centre, which was built in 2000, was destroyed and the first floor severely damaged. A structural survey is to be carried out in the next few weeks to determine whether to demolish the entire building or if it can be rebuilt from the ground floor level up.
