Sure Start smokers quit with parents' help

Staff at a Sure Start Children's Centre in Hampshire who smoke have been motivated to quit after parents invited them to attend a weekly smoking cessation group.

The smoking cessation group was originally set up at Sure Start Rowner in Gosport, Hampshire, eight years ago by local parents who wanted friendly and professional support to help them stop smoking.

In January they took this a step further and invited staff who smoke to a coffee morning to encourage them to give up or reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke and attend the centre's smoking cessation group.

Five out of the 17 members of staff who smoke attended the coffee morning.

As a result of the group, two members of staff say they have quit smoking and another has reduced the number of cigarettes she smokes.
