Switch on to ICT

Last month we looked at the options for purchasing a data projector. This article explores its use in the nursery. Your first task is to set up the projector. If you are using a desktop PC then you will have to connect it through the monitor socket at the back of the machine. If you are using a laptop then you will need to set it for external monitor use. This is usually with one of the function keys, F4 or F5; it sometimes has a picture of a monitor on it. Hold down the Fn key, usually bottom right of the keyboard, and press the correct function key.

There are usually three settings: LCD panel only, external monitor only, or both, and so you may need to press it a few times to get it right. With a laptop, don't forget to plug in any external audio speakers.

A data projector is great for whole class teaching or for demonstrating a piece of software or ICT skill. In the nursery, any of the early years CD-Roms or talking books, such as 'Just Grandma and Me', are wonderful when projected. The projector is also a good way of demonstrating how to use a new piece of software children will go on to use independently.

Use a data projector to introduce new concepts within children's mathematical development or language and literacy skills. Used in conjunction with early story building software, such as Story Maker, it enables class stories to be easily created about different things the children are investigating or learning about, aided by class discussions.

Finally, a projector can be used to 'show' finished computer work, digital photographs and even video clips to the whole class.
