Take a healthy food tip from a teddy bear

A teddy bear chef is teaching nursery children about nutrition on his quest to fight childhood obesity.

The bear, Mr Willow, aims to teach children how to cook and be more confident in handling food.

He has already helped promote healthy food activities and served nutritionally balanced meals to Willow Cottage Nurseries in Oxfordshire, and is now set to deliver his healthy message to settings across the country.

Mr Willow's motto is 'Start it off', echoing chef Jamie Oliver's 'Pass it on' campaign that promoted healthy school dinners.

The creator of the teddy bear chef and owner of the two Willow Cottage Nurseries, Valerie Grady, has launched a website headed up by Mr Willow to offer childcarers downloadable taster packs, including fun food activities, healthy food ideas, games, recipes and a full three-week children's menu.

The packs will also include help for parents with healthy recipes that can be prepared at home and tips on how to improve their family's health and diet.

Ms Grady said, 'Now more than ever, healthy food and fun food education is a must for every nursery. Our practical and easy-to-use resources enable nursery managers and early years professionals to confidently inspire and lead their teams and develop partnerships with parents by acting as role models through the importance they are giving to food in the nursery kitchen and classroom.'

Last year, Conservative party leader David Cameron visited Willow Cottage Nurseries to show his support for the campaign. The nursery was a runner-up in the Nursery Food Awards in 2007.

Mr Willow will be on hand to teach children how to make spinach breadsticks and help parents prepare smaller sized meals at the Children's Food Festival in Oxford on 27 and 28 June.
