Picking up on an interest in cake-making can give opportunities for promoting children's creative development, Jane Drake explains Observation in setting

Rosie and Leanne were observed on a few occasions pretending to make cakes in the malleable materials area. They rolled pieces of dough into balls and flattened them on to the wooden board with their hands. They then added smaller dough balls to the top of their 'cakes' as decoration. When they were satisfied that a cake was finished, they took it to the home corner.

Rosie put hers in the oven saying, 'It's going to cook now so don't open the door until it's ready.' Leanne added, 'It's a special cake I for lots of people.'
