Tales of the city

At this time of year all childcare students who are about to qualify and would like to be live-in nannies should be seriously looking for jobs. How easy it is to find work may depend on where you live, but there is always great demand for nannies in and around London - which is why the careers of so many nannies who left their home towns for a live-in job began there. Deborah Bright gained her BTec in 1995. She recalls, 'I come from a small village in Lincolnshire and there were no childcare jobs around at the time. I had worked very hard to get my BTec and was determined to get at least one nanny job, so I applied to some London agencies. After several interviews, I chose a job caring for a three-year-old boy and his baby sister. I went through an agency because if I was going to be in a new place miles away from family and friends, I wanted to be able to talk to someone if anything went wrong.
