At our last count six months ago, the top 20 chains provided around 37,800 places, an increase of 14.5 per cent on the previous year.

Nursery care is big business these days and it is continuing to grow at a meteoric rate. At our last count six months ago, the top 20 chains provided around 37,800 places, an increase of 14.5 per cent on the previous year.

As private equity firms get in on the act and plans to float on the stock market take hold it is easy to forget that many of these companies started life as a single nursery established by a parent with childcare problems.

And it wasn't that long ago: Busy Bees and Kidsunlimited, two of the longest-established chains, are both still under 20 years old.
