This is a short but extremely useful book, written by one of the most (if not the most) respected workers in the field of autism. Lorna Wing's readable style is interesting and very informative.

The first part of the book gives background information and explores important issues related to people who have an autistic disorder. The second part is packed with down-to-earth, practical ideas and suggestions for managing, living with and/or working with someone who has autism.

The book is relevant for professionals and parents involved from the early years through to adulthood. For example, there are suggestions on how to plan a graduated approach to reducing inappropriate behaviours, how to teach basic skills and how to work in a multi-disciplinary situation.

If you are looking for a sound and sensible work, based on years of first hand experience (Dr Wing's own daughter is autistic) and research (she has been in the forefront of exploration of autistic spectrum disorders since the 1970s), this book is a must. If your setting buys only one title about autism this year, it should be this one.
