* The Children's Commissioner for England, Professor Al Aynsley-Green, received a knighthood for his services to children in the Queen's birthday honours. Alison Ruddock, head of the early years service in the London Borough of Islington, was awarded an OBE. Mrs Ruddock has held her post for 12 years and overseen the setting up of six Sure Start programmes.
