(Photograph) - Photo Steve Race The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Janet Looker, meets Tia Cort at the official opening of three new neighbourhood nurseries in the city. The nurseries, which have been established on school sites at Westfield, Hob Moor and Clifton Green, will provide quality, affordable childcare in some of York's most disadvantaged neighbourhoods. They will offer childcare for parents who are in the process of accessing training and seeking work, and provide respite care for the parents and carers of children with special needs. Neighbourhood nursery places are also being offered by a number of smaller nurseries in the city. The initiative is part of York's ongoing commitment to ensure that children from disadvantaged backgrounds are healthy and have access to good education from an early age. The nurseries form part of a national programme to create 45,000 new childcare places throughout the country by the end of 2004.
