The Low Pay Commission

The Low Pay Commission is carrying out a consultation exercise on the advantages and disadvantages of a minimum wage for young people aged 16 and 17. At present, people under the age of 18 do not qualify for the national minimum wage, while 18- to 21-year-olds qualify for a rate of Pounds 3.60 per hour, due to rise to 3.80 from 1 October. Those over 22 qualify for the adult minimum wage of 4.20 per hour, to rise to 4.50. The Low Pay Commission said it wished to hear about jobs held by 16- and 17-year-olds and views on how the minimum wage would interact with Government policies to encourage this age group to remain in education. The deadline for responses is 31 October. For details, contact call 020 7855 4788 or visit www.lowpay.gov.uk.
