The Marazon approach

* We would not think of cooking without kitchen 'tools' and the same should apply to all early years practitioners: we should not be willing to work without 'teaching tools', says Renee Marazon. The Marazon system is a set of teaching tools that enables practitioners to individualise weekly planning and assessment practices based upon the emerging needs and interests of children.

The Marazon system is a set of teaching tools that enables practitioners to individualise weekly planning and assessment practices based upon the emerging needs and interests of children.

The system is based on solid theoretical foundations related to child development research. The role of modelling (Bandura, 1977), the impact of more competent peers (Vygotsky, 1978), the manifestation of multiple intelligences (Gardner, 1999), the construction of knowledge (Piaget, 1965), and influence of society on self-concept development (Erikson, 1993) are imbedded in the Marazon system because they are viewed as critical elements in the growth and learning process of each child.

Six 'domains' or broad categories of human growth and development help guide individualised and group practices related to assessment and planning and serve as a template for appropriate practice. The domains are:
