The number of children in primary school classes across Scotland is continuing to decline

The number of children in primary school classes across Scotland is continuing to decline, according to research published by the Scottish Executive. The latest annual pupil census of publicly funded schools shows that the average primary class size is 23.7, down from 24 in 2002. Not only are there now fewer primary schools - 2,248, ten fewer than in 2002 - there has also been a 2 per cent drop in the number of primary school pupils. Education minister Peter Peacock said that the statistics demonstrate that the government is 'continuing to make progress in reducing class sizes'.
