The Spending Review and Five-Year Plan at a glance

* The Sure Start budget will rise from 2004/05 to 2007/08 by 769m, an average real terms increase of 17 per cent * 120,000 additional childcare places by 2008

* The number of children's centres by 2008 to rise from previous projections of 1,700 to 2,500, with an extra 100m investment, to reach 30 per cent of deprived wards. Eventually there will be a children's centre 'within easy reach of every parent'

* Extended schools, both primary and secondary, will act as hubs for community services for children and families

* Pilots to extend free part-time nursery education to 12,000 two-year-olds in 500 areas of disadvantage

* Childcare and education to be integrated through 'educare' for three-and four-year-olds to be used flexibly across the week for a minimum of 33 weeks a year
