This is the way we go to school

Dundee nursery children and their parents may find the potentially difficult transition to school easier after a series of informal sessions organised by Dundee City Council's neighbourhood resources and education departments.

Sessons on the theme 'going to school' were held for children from Wallacetown Nursery and their parents at Arthurstone library. Adult education worker Sheila Roussel (pictured, centre) talked to the children about basic requirements, such as school uniforms, pencil cases, school bags and lunchboxes, before going on to discuss playground games.

She explained, 'This is a gentle approach and is all about getting the parents to become interested in their child's learning and finding out how they can help.'

After librarian Sandra Westgate (pictured, left) read a series of stories about starting school, the children got down to making their own family book. They filled in their names as authors and illustrators, then drew pictures of what they expected to find at school, with their parents writing the accompanying text.

Each child went home with a goodie bag, filled with items to encourage drawing and writing activities at home.

As well as helping children, the sessions have encouraged parents to join the library. Mrs Roussel also acts as a point of contact for parents who may have their own learning needs.
