Thousands of people gather in the centre of Belfast

Thousands of people gathered in the centre of Belfast last Friday to call for an end to sectarianism in Northern Ireland. The demonstration was organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and followed the murder of a Catholic teenager, Gerald Lawlor, last month. Earlier in the week Mark Durkan, deputy first minister, had called for sectarianism to be 'faced down'. He said, 'Sectarianism scars our society and is doing untold damage. It simply cannot go on. We must overcome it and reassert our determination to build an inclusive society.'
