Tied up by Sure Start

In response to the Sure Start feature ('Powers of attraction', 15 December), it is all very well for doctors, professors and civil servants to comment on the childcare industry; however, what is said often shows that they do not fully understand what they are commenting upon. June O'Sullivan, chief executive of Westminster Children's Society, is quoted, 'They should give it (Sure Start) time, let it become embedded so that it can be evaluated meaningfully and accept that it's not going to be perfect in all places.'

Who is the mythical 'they' referred to? 'They', on this occasion, are the:

* voluntary sector who have been decimated by Sure Start

* private sector who are being closed by unfair practice and Government soft-funded competition

* solid lower- and middle- working class families who are losing choice and being asked to fund this Sure Start debacle from taxes and increased fees.
