First the bad news: you're in the wrong job. The Women and Work Commission says that in the course of a working life, a woman could forfeit as much as Pounds 1m for being a woman.

No, it's not discrimination, insists the chair of the commission, Baroness Mary Prosser, it's because so many women workers are in low-paying jobs: caring, catering, cleaning, clerical.

The commission suggests that girls need better information to make better career choices.

So, you're in the wrong job. But before you decide to take up rocket science, you need to know that within two or three years of starting work a chasm will open up between your income and a man's.
