If Britain is to make good its promises on the reduction of child poverty in line with international pledges, then we're going to have to raise taxes.

We all knew this, of course. It's just that until now we've not been asked.

At last the Government has ventured to question the hypothesis that anything can be done about anything for nothing, by floating the tax question in order to save millions of children across the planet from death, illness and ignorance.

It should be confident of our answer. It is, of course, yes!

When it comes to disaster relief and debt relief, public opinion in Britain and the world has shown itself to be more than willing, indeed more willing than our governments - exemplified by the response to the tsunami and to the G8 summit.
