In the second part of our feature on early years careers, Patricia Slatcher talks to the staff of nursery classes and schools as well as day centres in the maintained sector Nursery classes and schools

Nursery classes and schools

Compared with working in the private and voluntary sectors (see Nursery World 26 July), nursery nurses in maintained settings - that is, those run by local government - tend to fare better on pay. But there is also a much greater awareness among early years staff in this sector of how much salaries vary across the country because of local agreements. This has become a real bugbear for them.

Generally, nursery nurses in nursery schools and classes are paid on the local authority pay scale, falling between Points 6 and 15. In April 2001 this was set at 9,912 to 12,879, with London weighting ranging from Pounds 444 for the outer fringes of the city to 2,556 for inner London. Local disputes have raised pay in a few areas, the most successful being in Nottingham, where senior nursery nurses have just won parity with teachers on pay at 15,741 to 18,417 (see Nursery World, 28 June).
