Training Today: Foreword

The Children's Workforce Development Council is driving a process of change in training that will ultimately affect everyone working in the early years sector. Whatever level you are working at, the current overhaul in qualifications will certainly present new challenges and opportunities.

'Topping up' qualifications is a big issue. Following a review of over300 awards, CWDC has placed a new duty on employers to ensure that staffdelivering the EYFS hold a 'full and relevant' qualification. InTraining Today we examine how this can be approached effectively.

New qualifications continue to be added to the framework (listed in ourMove On Up section) but a fundamental rethink is underway. CWDC hasunveiled plans to develop a new, all-conquering Level 3 qualification, designed to help the sector move towards the Government aim that allearly years staff be qualified to Level 3 from 2015.

Raising the bar is also about bringing more graduates into the sector tomove towards the Government's aim of having an Early Years Professionalin every setting. EYPs are steadily swelling their ranks and the statusis undoubtedly opening up a career in childcare to a more diverse rangeof individuals.

At the same time, it is recognised that there must be clear progressionroutes based on prior accredited learning for experienced practitionerswho may not be able to access academic study.

Continuing professional development has never been more important. TheEYFS is proving a spur to further training - particularly in areas suchas outdoor play, keyworking and reflective practice.

In our Improve Your Practice section we cover the ever-increasingbreadth of good practice courses and workshops that will inspire you towork effectively under the EYFS and take your career forward into new, rewarding areas.
