Project outline

Under the sea

Rocks, shells and who lives among them

Mini topic

Weigh up some measuring activities

Encourage children to develop their positional vocabulary by playing a treasure hunt game.

Planned learning intention

Knowledge and understanding of the world

Resources

'Treasure' paper scissors paint

Step by step

* Ask the children to choose something to represent a 'treasure'. This could be a small teddy, a toy car or a box covered in gold paper.

* Explain that you are going to hide the treasure and they must try to find it.

* Make a footprint trail for the children to follow. Ask them to remove their shoes and draw around them on to a sheet of paper. Paint them in bright colours and cut them out when dry. The length of trail you require will determine how many footprints you need.

* Lay the footprints along the floor leading indirectly to the treasure. If the trail is outdoors, ensure they will not blow away by placing a stone on them.

* As the children take turns to search, encourage them to use positional vocabulary such as next to, on top, under, behind, in front and so on.

* Have the children work on their own in pairs, one hiding the treasure and laying the trail while the other closes their eyes or leaves the room.
