Tristram Hunt named as new shadow education secretary

While there are no changes to senior Government posts following the reshuffle, Labour has made some key appointments to the shadow cabinet.

Ed Miliband named Tristram Hunt as the new shadow secretary of state for education, replacing Stephen Twigg.

Previously a shadow education spokesman, Mr Hunt was elected MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central in 2010.

Prior to becoming an MP he lectured in history at Queen Mary, University of London. The historian is the author of several books, including Building Jerusalem: The rise and fall of the Victorian City, and has written and presented history programmes for radio and television.

Mr Twigg will work as a shadow minister with Sadiq Khan, the newly appointed shadow Lord Chancellor and secretary of state for Justice.

Meanwhile, David Cameron's reshuffle did not lead to any changes to the ministerial team at the Department for Education.
