TUC rules forbid member unions from actively recruiting in areas where other members already have a well-established presence. Unison, the GMB and the T&G have complained to the TUC about the ATL's activities and have asked it to undertake formal proceedings against the ATL. If a resolution cannot be reached, this could ultimately result in the expulsion of the teaching union, which joined the TUC a few years ago.
Unison's national secretary for education, Christina McAnea, said, 'Employers do not recognise ATL as a union that represents school support staff at a local or national level. As an individual, you can be represented by any union you choose, but if that union is not recognised by your employer it is not in a position to negotiate your terms and conditions.
