'The 1940s House - Into the Unknown'

The Hymers family experiences what life was like during the Second World War when they have to construct an Anderson shelter and put up blackout curtains without delay - non-compliance will lead to a fine from their already meagre household budget. When rationing is introduced and then the first air-raid siren sounds, the family's mettle is put to the test.

A third of all food consumed in Britain is imported. In the wake of the current French BSE scare and amid growing concerns about the safety of imported food, the programme asks how effective are the mechanisms in place to prevent contaminated food reaching British homes and looks at whether enough is being done to protect the public.
