TV medium is a mirror

By Iain Lauchlan, co-creator and producer of the pre-school television programme 'Tweenies' When we developed the content of 'Tweenies' we studied the pre-school curriculum of the time and made sure that the titles for the series reflected children's development. We found we could tackle issues such as being in a bad mood, pinching, telling lies, writing on walls and safety, as well as introducing children to other parts of the world, areas of history and interesting features of their own country. We could entertain them with songs, games and stories. The list was endless.

Because we had gone for the simple concept of four children in a room, we could tackle anything. We chose the playgroup as a venue because it is the first real social gathering of pre-schoolers when they come into contact with children other than their own siblings and next-door neighbours.
