UN backs UK moves on children's rights

The United Nations has backed most of the recommendations made by the four children's commissioners in the UK to improve the lives of children.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) published an assessment of the UK's progress on Friday. The CRC, which is based in Geneva, reports every five years on the record of every country that has signed up to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The UK commissioners had presented more than 100 recommendations to the committee in June.

The report called on the Government to implement the legislation aimed at ending child poverty by 2020, including 'measurable indicators for their achievement'.

The CRC said it was concerned that the Government strategy was not targeted at groups of children in the most severe poverty and that the standard of living for Traveller children was 'particularly poor'.
