I work more than double the hours that my colleague, a nursery nurse, does, both at home and after the nursery session. If our salaries were compared by the hourly rate, I am sure I would probably be earning less than she does.
How does that compensate for the additional responsibility, skills and academic achievement that I bring to the nursery children?
I do appreciate how hard my colleague works, her contribution to planning, the skills and experience she has that enhance the children's education - and I know that she deserves a higher salary.
However, just because the staff rota for next week that I should be typing up now (it's a Saturday morning as I write this) includes my turn to clean the toilets, this does not mean that my colleague and I are doing the same job.
