The CYWU, which has up to 400 playworker members, started representing the sector in the 1950s, and is the only union with a specialist section for playwork. 'With the Government's commitment to playwork, the union took the decision to pay extra special attention to the sector,' said general secretary Doug Nicholls.
'The missing links in the sector are playworkers' own self-organisation. Playworkers have been divided and fragmented,' he said. 'The object of the conferences is to bring playworkers together, to further the campaign for better pay and to make people aware of the available training opportunities -not only through the union, but through SPRITO as well, which will have speakers at each of the meetings.'
