Unsure teachers hold children back in maths

Young children in Wales are being held back in maths because teachers lack confidence and understanding of the subject, according to Welsh inspectors.

A report published on Tuesday by Her Majesty's Inspectorate forEducation and Training in Wales (Estyn),Wales' equivalent of Ofsted, found that many schools are failing to help children between the ages ofthree and seven to reach their full potential in maths, with teachersrelying too heavily on worksheets and failing to assess what childrenneed to learn next.

Inspectors also noted a lack of consistency and accuracy in the way thatchildren are assessed, with some children being given work that isrepetitive and too simple instead of working on new tasks that challengetheir thinking and problem solving skills.

However, the inspectors found early indications that the standards ofteaching in maths are improving for children aged under five since theintroduction of the Foundation Phase.
